Counseling is the use of active listening and problem-solving skills, along with knowledge about human growth and mental health, to assist other people to resolve a life problem. The basic premise behind it is that people are capable of solving most of their own problems of daily living if given a chance. The role of the counselor is not to solve people’s problems for them but rather to assist them in finding their own solutions. Counselors do not tell people what they “should” do, nor do they give advice; counselors generally do not interpret or diagnose. As such, counselors are not professionals and cannot assume that we know what a person is thinking or feeling any better than the person does. Rather, using active listening and counseling skills that are presented, the counselor helps the counselee clarify his/her own thoughts and feelings and explore various options and solutions.
The purpose of the training is to familiarize participants with some basic therapeutic techniques to be used in a counseling situation.
